Introduction
We often confuse 'poly' and 'co-poly'. In short: a poly is a monofilament string, made of a single polymer, such as PET. A co-poly consists of polyester with various additives. Co-poly strings are designed to reduce some of the disadvantages of pure polyester strings, such as stiffness and tension loss. Co-poly strings retain their tension better and offer more comfort, which is important for players who are prone to arm injuries such as tennis elbow. Stephan recently developed minor tennis elbow complaints and therefore thought it was a good time to try out the Diadem Flash 17, a comfortable co-poly.
Judgement
Review Diadem Flash 17
Stephan tested the Diadem Flash 17 in his Wilson Clash 100 (custom) at 22 kg (length and cross strings). He immediately noticed that the string felt soft on his arm and provided a lot of length in his strokes without the balls flying off the racket. He also noticed the predictability of the string; balls always landed in the same place, which gave him the confidence to hit with full force.
Power/control and voltage maintenance
The Diadem Flash 17 played very consistently, with excellent ball feel despite the lower tension. Stephan could easily place drop shots and enjoyed the stable feeling. After 6 hours of intensive play on clay, he noticed that the tension retention was excellent and that there was little visible wear. This also makes the string financially attractive.
Spin/Slice
Although the Flash 17 does not offer extreme spin, Stephan was pleased with its spin potential. At times, the string’s lively response resulted in longer slices, which may have been due to the lower tension. However, for a round string, the Flash 17 offered decent spin.
Comfort/ball feel
Stephan was curious about the comfort, given his mild tennis elbow complaints. He concluded that the Diadem Flash 17 is a soft poly that plays comfortably, without the disadvantages of stiffness that can cause injuries. The ball feel was almost the same as that of other polys, but without the "venomous edges".
Conclusion
If you like to play with poly strings, but are also looking for comfort to prevent arm problems, the Diadem Flash 17 is an excellent choice. Stephan was pleasantly surprised and may have found his new favorite string!
