ASICS Solution Speed FF 2 tested

The ASICS Solution Speed FF 2 is a fantastic update to an already popular tennis shoe. With its lightweight, responsive feel, and improved forefoot support and lateral stability, this shoe remains a firm favourite. Read my full review below.

Specifications ASICS Solution Speed FF 2:

  • Brand : ASICS
  • Model : Solution Speed FF 2
  • Weight : 362 grams (size 10.5 = 44.5)

Intro:

ASICS shoes have become a staple in my tennis gear. I have played the Challenger 12 , Resolution 7 and 8 , and the Gel Solution Speed 3 over the years.

The Challenger is a great all-rounder with a supple upper and comfortable cushioning. The Resolution offers ultimate lateral stability and durability. But the Solution Speed is by far the fastest and lightest of them all. The 'old' Gel Solution Speed 3 was my favorite ASICS shoe, so far...

Fit:

The Solution Speed FF 2 has a medium to slightly more compact fit. Although the shoe is not extremely narrow, I would recommend the Resolution to someone with a wider foot. In terms of sizing, I always wear size 9.5 (43.5 EU) with ASICS, and that also applies to this shoe.

What I noticed is that the forefoot is a bit more compact than the previous version ( FF 1 ). The shoe has a lower toe box and the Dynawrap construction at the lower laces ensures a better enclosure of the forefoot.

Speed/agility:

The ASICS Solution Speed FF 2 is built for speed and agility. The shoe offers a 'low to the ground' playing feel, which ensures a good connection with the surface.

Unlike the Challenger and Resolution , the sole of the Solution Speed FF 2 consists of two parts: a separate forefoot and a separate heel section. This makes the shoe more agile, because the two parts can move independently of each other, without compromising stability. The Twisstruss technology connects both parts and ensures excellent maneuverability without making the shoe feel too soft.

Stability:

The stability of the Solution Speed FF 2 is impressive for a 'speed' shoe. The PU upper is not only hard-wearing, but also offers good grip on the forefoot. The Dynawrap construction at the first eyelets provides extra support when pushing off to the side.

On the outside of the forefoot there are two small plastic edges that provide even more stability. For maximum support and sensitive ankles I would recommend the Resolution 8 with Dynawall technology , which is even more stable.

Sustainability ASICS Solution Speed FF 2:

The upper of the shoe is robust and can handle dragging and sliding well, both at the toes and on the medial side. As for the outsole, I haven't had enough hours to fully assess its durability. I tested the all-court sole, which is mainly suitable for hard courts and indoor courts. For clay or artificial grass, the clay variant with a herringbone profile is recommended.

However, from previous experiences with ASICS (and this sole type) I expect that durability will be fine.

Comfort/cushioning:

The Solution Speed FF 2 offers not only speed, but also solid comfort. The shoe offers good cushioning without being too soft, so you keep the quick response. The FlyteFoam material is soft, but responsive enough to handle the impact of hard surfaces.

The upper also feels comfortable, without pressing on the flex points of the forefoot, which was sometimes a problem with the Solution Speed FF 1 .

Grip:

The grip of the all-court sole was better than expected on clay, although I did notice that the grip of my ASICS Gel Challenger 12 with clay sole was clearly better. For clay, artificial grass or smash court I would recommend the clay version of the shoe, as it offers better grip on those surfaces.

Bottom line: ASICS Solution Speed FF 2

The ASICS Solution Speed FF 2 is a fast and light shoe that also offers solid comfort and improved support. For a shoe in this category, the stability is impressive, as is the cushioning, without this being at the expense of the direct playing feel. The upper is more comfortable than the previous version, without pressure points on the forefoot.

All in all this is a great update to the Solution Speed and without a doubt my favorite ASICS tennis shoe at the moment. Hopefully a carpet sole version for indoor carpet will be released later this year.
