Tested: New Balance Minimus 60 tennis shoe

It is now clear that tennis shoes are no longer the stiff clogs of the past. But what about minimalist tennis shoes, such as the New Balance Minimus 60 ? Do they really work well on the tennis court? Today we discuss this ultra-light, fast tennis shoe, a must-have for players looking for a minimalist shoe.

Minimalist shoes, also called 'natural', are mainly known from the running sport. They are known for their low profile (little to no difference in heel and forefoot height), little support at the heel, a lot of flexibility, and direct contact with the ground. The idea is that these shoes allow your foot to move more freely, which activates more muscle groups and makes your lower body stronger. For some, this type of shoe works perfectly, for others it can lead to injuries, such as problems with the Achilles tendons or calves.

Now this type of shoe has slowly made its entrance into tennis. ASICS took the first step with models like the Gel-Solution Lyte and Gel Solution Speed. But now New Balance comes with the Minimus 60 .

Specifications New Balance Minimus 60

  • Brand: New Balance
  • Model: Minimus 60
  • Drop (height difference from heel to forefoot): 4 mm
  • Weight: 278 grams
  • Sole profile: Gravel (clay)

The New Balance Minimus 60 is the first tennis shoe from this brand with a Minimus design. The height difference between the heel and the forefoot, the so-called drop, is only 4 mm. This ensures a low-to-the-ground effect, which is ideal for tennis, a sport in which you play a lot on the forefeet. The shoe has a deep herringbone profile on the sole, which ensures excellent grip on clay courts.

The upper of the shoe consists of a mix of synthetic materials and mesh, while the REVlite midsole provides fine cushioning in the lightest possible design.

New Balance Minimus 60 outsole

I experienced the fit of the Minimus 60 as a bit spacious in the forefoot, but I was able to solve this with a thin Mysole insole. In terms of stability, a minimalist shoe naturally does not score high, but the stability of this shoe surprised me. The low profile contributes to a basic level of stability.

The grip of the deep herringbone tread is a breath of fresh air compared to the omni-sole of my ASICS Gel Resolution 5. The agility and speed of the shoe are particularly impressive. The light weight ensures that you remain fast and agile on the court.

A disadvantage is the durability. After intensive use, the stitching of the upper of my left shoe, mainly due to dragging, is already starting to come loose in two places. The REVlite cushioning in the midsole is very pleasant, however.

Conclusion

The New Balance Minimus 60 is an absolute must for players looking for a light, fast tennis shoe with a lot of grip. The stability is surprisingly good for a minimalist shoe, but the durability of the upper could be better. This is not a shoe for heavier players or people with sensitive ankles, but it is an excellent choice for those looking for speed, agility and good grip in a lightweight shoe. A firmer upper would be a nice improvement for the next version!
