Tested: New Balance Minimus 60 tennis shoe
Fortunately, we already know that tennis shoes no longer have to be those stiff clogs, but does a 'Minimus' or minimalist tennis shoe really work on the tennis court? Today our first shoe review and mijnracket.nl takes a good approach with not just any shoe. This is the New Balance Minimus 60, highly recommended for players looking for an ultra-light, fast shoe!
We know minimalist (also known as natural or minimal) shoes mainly from running, where this group of shoes has caused a lot of controversy in recent years. These shoes are characterized by a flatter stance (minimal to no difference in heel height vs. forefoot height), little to no support in the heel area, a lot of flexibility and direct ground contact. In short, a shoe that allows your foot to move freely, so that you target more muscle groups and ultimately get a stronger base. The natural running shoe works great for some people, while others immediately experience problems with their Achilles tendons and calves, for example. Now this shoe type has slowly made its entrance into tennis: ASICS to a certain extent with the Gel-Solution Lyte and Gel Solution Speed, light but with a sturdy heel counter. Now New Balance is launching a Minimus 60.
Specifications:
Brand: New Balance
Model: Minimus 60
Drop (height difference from heel to forefoot): 4 mm
Weight: 278 grams
Sole profile: gravel (clay)
The New Balance Minimus 60 is the first tennis shoe from this brand with the Minimus construction. The height difference from heel to forefoot (also called the drop in jargon) is only 4 mm. This 'low to the ground effect' fits perfectly with a forefoot sport such as tennis. The deep herringbone profile (herringbone outsole) of the sole gives this shoe excellent grip on gravel. The upper of the shoe is a lightweight mix of synthetic materials and mesh, where the REVlite material in the midsole provides nice cushioning in the lightest possible jacket.

Judgement:
Fit: 7
Stability: 6
Damping: 7.5
Grip: 9
Durability: 6
Agility and speed: 9
I experienced the fit of the shoe as a little loose in the forefoot, but this was easily resolved with a thin Mysole Solution padding sole. Of course, a minimalist shoe never scores high in terms of stability, although the stability of the New Balance Minimus 60 was not too bad for me. 'Low to the ground contributes to basic stability' is correct. The grip of the full outsole herringbone profile is a relief compared to the omni sole of my ASICS Gel Resolution 5 Omni. Where the New Balance Minimus 60 absolutely excels is in agility and speed. The durability of the shoe is not optimal, the stitching of the upper part of my left shoe is undoubtedly taking a lot of abuse from dragging, but is already starting to come loose in 2 places. The REVlite cushioning in the midsole is pleasant.
All in all, the New Balance Minimus 60 tennis shoe is highly recommended for the player who is looking for a light, fast shoe. The stability is not that bad for a Minimus, but a slightly more durable upper at the toe of the shoe would not be bad for edition 2.0. It is not a shoe for the heavier player or for someone who has more sensitive ankles, but I would definitely recommend the shoe to someone who is looking for agility, speed and good grip in a lightweight shoe.
